Media coverage as a result of study into the evolution of sexual exploitation.

In February DataExpert colleagues Chris de Meijer and Michelle Rasch started a fenomenon study on how sexual exploitation has evolved since the popularity of online sex work through platforms such as OnlyFans, Fanzen and Fansly.

The most important results of this study have been picked-up by Dutch national media: BNR Nieuwsradio interviewed Michelle and published the findings, after which RTL’s EditieNL and the Dagblad van het Noorden followed.

Watch the episode of EditieNL with Michelle's interview (from 03:27) here. (All content is in Dutch.)

Striking results

A striking phenomenon that emerged from this research was how the so-called E-pimps, also referring to themselves as OnlyFans managers (OFM), operate. Michelle and Chris noted that chat groups and social media channels are frequently used to exchange knowledge and methods are discussed on how people can be convinced to work as an OnlyFans model. Tips are exchanged on how to persuade models, how to deal with models who want to quit, the distribution of the proceeds and there is literally the selling of models happening.

These e-pimps use various methods to lie to and put pressure on the models. The models often do not know what they are actually getting into and what the consequences or dangers of this work are, which can be attributed to the deception of the e-pimps and not to the choices of the model.

In addition, this research has created a clear insight into the subculture that has emerged, the methods and language used to circumvent countermeasures from platforms. Being familiar with the modus operandi gives emergency services and investigators the necessary tools to combat this phenomenon efficiently.
